The brief
Legibility from a highway off-ramp to capture drivers deciding whether to take the exit.
What we made
Eastside Market needed to be legible from the highway off-ramp, which meant the letters had to be large enough to read in the two seconds a driver has before committing to the exit. We ran a sightline study, sized the letters accordingly, and mounted them on a painted raceway that disappears against the parapet so the letters look like they stand on their own.
The outcome
Off-ramp traffic into the lot increased through the first summer after install, which was the entire goal of the project.
